What is an MTP?

The Macon Area Transportation Study (MATS) Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) is undertaking an update to its Metropolitan Transportation Plan (MTP), which serves as the long-range transportation roadmap for the region. The plan is updated every five years (per Federal requirements), and this version of the updated plan extends the planning horizon year to 2055.

Any transportation project looking to be supported with Federal dollars must be reflected in the MTP and must reflect the goals and objectives described in the MTP. This MTP update will reflect significant regional and modal plans, assess multimodal transportation conditions and needs, update goals and objectives with stakeholder and public input, and result in a final plan document to guide transportation planning and investment decisions through 2055. The MTP update process began in early 2026 and is expected to conclude in early 2027.

Area Covered in MTP

The MATS MPO planning area includes Macon-Bibb County, southwest Jones County, and southeast Monroe County.

Engagement Opportunities

Public and stakeholder engagement are important components in an MTP, and there will be multiple opportunities for community members to participate and provide feedback in both in-person and online settings.

Engagement opportunities for this project will include an online survey and interactive map, pop-up events, community open houses, and stakeholder advisory and MPO committee meetings.
